河外星系的视向退行速度与距离成正比,即距离越远,视向速度越大,也就是如果星系之间的距离越遥远,它们远离对方的速度就越大。由于从广义相对论推导出我们的宇宙是个有限而封闭的四维球体,那么球体只能向外膨胀才能满足哈勃定律,因而我们的宇宙是随着时间的推移而膨胀的。
