呼吸运动的调节其实是神经体液调节。简单说,体内过多的二氧化塘刺激脑干中的呼吸中枢兴奋,这个过程的调节属于体液调节,呼吸中枢对呼吸频率的调节属于神经调节,呼吸的神经中枢产生呼吸节律的神经元位于延髓,分吸气中枢和呼气中枢。吸气神经元与呼气神经元交织在一起,构成神经网络,发生彼此影响。二氧化碳弥散过血脑屏障后,通过化学反应来影响脑脊液的pH值。这些感受器对血液和脑脊液pH的变化特别敏感。脑脊液的pH变化通过这些感受器作用于延髓的呼吸中枢,改变呼吸节律和幅度来调节神经系统的pH值水平。
